What is the Summer in the City?
Summer in the City is an 8 week long discipleship program hosted by Campus Outreach in Peoria, IL. We are creating a similar experience to our full blown project in Pigeon Forge, TN, the Summer Mountain Project. You will have the chance to get training in 2 primary areas - evangelism and how to study the bible. Plus, we will worship together weekly and fellowship over meals. Your weekends will be free to accommodate travel, time with family, and rest.
Who is going to be on the SIC?
Current college students, recent graduates, and Campus Outreach full-time staff from Bradley University, Monmouth College, Eastern Illinois University, Olivet Nazarene University, and others.
How do I commit?
You will be notified if you are accepted or rejected by email. If accepted, you have until Monday, May 7 to complete the Commitment Form and pay your $75 deposit (non-refundable), which will be done online through an email you will receive from our office. Our hope is you will find a job in the City that will accommodate our training schedule so you can maximize this experience.
What are the Commitments?
While we are looking for a commitment from every person on the SIC, we are open to building a unique plan for you. Our goal is to help each individual make the most of the SIC. If your work schedule (or varsity sports practice) conflicts, feel free to submit a request to the SIC Director for special permission to still participate in specific parts of the SIC. This can be done on the Application form.
Church: We ask that you commit to attend church weekly. If you’re living in Peoria, you should attend with us at Grace Presbyterian Church any time you are in town for the weekends. We will have CO graduates leading our Sunday School, so you won't want to miss that!
Trainings: We are only asking for roughly 6 hours of your week. Monday night trainings and Wednesday/Thursday night outreaches are the “meat” of the summer. The hope is that you would be at all of these events or at least 1 of the events all 8 weeks.
$75: A one-time payment of $75. This covers project materials (NB and book), a few cookout meals, and potentially a project t shirt.
Why do we ask for these Commitments?
In order to maximize personal growth and a Team-mentality, we ask that you first pray about making a commitment to be a member of SIC before paying your Registration Fee. SIC is designed to be a Community of people all pursuing the same goals together as a unit. While our weekly College Class, church service, and cookouts are open-invite, our more formal trainings are designed to build upon each other week by week.
Word Training: You will receive up front teaching while also doing your own study of the bible. These will range from diving into key doctrines of the entire bible to more in-depth looks at individual passages with built in discussion times. Our Campus Outreach staff will be available to guide you at each step.
Evangelism Training and Outreach: Ever felt the need to watch someone else share the gospel to learn how to navigate a spiritual conversation? You’ll get the opportunity each week as well as receive some formal training in a group setting.
*What is Optional?
Divine Design Assessment: Steve will take people through an 80 page Assessment called the Equipping the Saints packet. The packet helps you learn about yourself through spiritual gift testing, ministry passions, and personality tests. This takes time to fill out and then we will have a 1 hour meeting to discuss the results.
Small Groups: If you’re interested in joining a small group for added encouragement, accountability, and to get to know others on a more personal level.
